What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle healing technique that promotes well-being by

restoring the flow of energy, balance, and harmony on all levels -

mind, body, heart, and soul.

Reiki has the beautiful ability to meet us where we are and gives us whatever we need most in any season or cycle of life.

Reiki therapy can help to support you in feeling like your most vibrant and aligned self.

It is a powerful yet supportive tool as you grow and honor each step forward on the journey toward more joy, vitality, and connection - a balm for the soul amidst the busyness of our day-to-day lives.

Wherever we are feeling stagnant, stressed, or stuck in life, we can find our way again by cultivating a deeper relationship with our inner wisdom - Reiki helps us to mindfully listen inward, while nourishing and restoring the physical body, as well.

Reiki (pronounced Ray-Kee) is a Japanese technique for whole-person healing. The term 'reiki' comes from the Japanese words 'rei," meaning universal wisdom, and "ki,"

which means life force energy that flows through all living things. Reiki is a form of complementary therapy also known as energy healing.

I like to say Reiki is somewhere between massage and meditation. Reiki is sometimes compared to acupuncture without needles, and I do integrate light acupressure and options for aromatherapy into my sessions for a deeper connection with your physical senses and the nervous system.  Clients often report feeling deeply relaxed, restored, and renewed on all levels.

Reiki therapy is done through light touch - warm and soothing energy flows from the hands to the client, promoting relaxation, helping you connect to your inner landscape and releasing tension. The client is lying in a calming environment, fully clothed and with eyes closed.

In receiving Reiki, our bodies can experience deep relaxation and release of energy blockages. Chakras become balanced, meridians are cleared, and stress symptoms subside. In this way, Reiki treats not only our physical body but can also bring harmony and wholeness to our mind and emotions.  Through restoring this energy, we bring all of ourselves back into equilibrium - Reiki considers the whole person.

Many of us feel overstressed, overwhelmed, and out of alignment as we try to juggle all the demands of modern day living - often leaving us feeling lost and weary.

Reiki helps us to come back home to ourselves by feeling more peace, ease, clarity, and alignment - it helps us relax into our being and return to our true nature.

History of Reiki

Reiki has a rich tapestry of history, where students and teachers weave a relationship of integrity, mentorship, reverence, and self-growth as they share in the techniques of Reiki and growing the community of practitioners.

While different forms of Reiki have been practiced for over 2500 years,  the art of Reiki practice was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1920s. Dr. Usui discovered and taught a more formalized practice and system of Reiki known as Usui Ryoho Reiki or 'the Usui System of Natural Healing'.

Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-Hawaiian Reiki master began teaching Usui's modality in Hawaii in the 1930s and it traveled to the rest of the United States in the 1970s.

As early as the mid-1990s, physicians, nurses, and other medical staff who learned Reiki began using the technique in hospitals around the United States. Many  medical institutions have active or exploratory Reiki programs in  hospitals, palliative and cancer centers, mental health programs, and treatment offices.

There is an expanding body of research on Reiki as an effective complementary and healing modality.  More education and interest in Reiki continues to be prevalent in both the medical and spiritual wellness communities.
